Addison Worwood Accident: Missionary Remains in Critical Condition After Being Struck by Vehicle in Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Sister Addison Worwood, a missionary serving in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission, remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Johnson City, Tennessee, according to her family.

Worwood and her missionary companion were reportedly crossing in a crosswalk Tuesday morning when a driver did not see her, according to her aunt, Kelly Gribbin.

Addison’s parents traveled to Tennessee the following afternoon and are now by their daughter’s side as she continues to receive intensive medical treatment.

Multiple Surgeries Following Serious Injuries

Worwood has been serving for approximately one year of her 18-month missionary assignment.

According to her family, she has undergone multiple brain surgeries following the accident. Doctors performed procedures to relieve pressure and stop bleeding in her brain.

Surgeons also removed part of her skull to accommodate swelling. Another section was subsequently repaired and secured with a titanium plate.

During one of the operations, plastic surgeons treated significant cuts to Addison’s nose and face.

Her injuries also include fractures to her face and hip. Those injuries will require additional treatment once her neurological condition is stable enough to allow doctors to address them.

Family Says Next 24 to 48 Hours Are Critical

Addison remains in the surgical intensive care unit as medical teams closely monitor her condition.

Her family reported that doctors have reduced her sedation, although she remains on pain medication and is being supported by a ventilator.

According to her mother, Addison is able to move her arms and legs but is not yet following commands. Medical staff continue to closely monitor her blood pressure and heart rate as they assess her progress.

Her family said the next 24 to 48 hours are expected to be particularly important in determining how she responds to treatment.

The immediate goal is for Addison to continue recovering from her neurological injuries and, when medically possible, begin breathing without assistance.

Family Remains Hopeful

Despite the seriousness of Addison’s injuries, her family remains hopeful about her recovery.

“We remain hopeful that she will continue to incrementally improve,” her mother said, while expressing gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, fasting and support during this difficult time.

The family has received support from people who have followed Addison’s story and are hoping for positive developments in her condition.

The Worwood family owns The Bow Shop and 7 Woods Outdoors in Nephi, Utah, and members of their community have rallied around the family as Addison continues her recovery in Tennessee.
